& Enduro 1 podiums for Salminen and Seistola at EWC GP of Portugal

Australian Matt Phillips on his TE310R led the Husqvarna Enduro Team by CH Racing team’s charge at the Enduro World Championship GP of Portugal where the Enduro Junior class racer claimed an impressive double win. Opening up a solid lead in the EJ class as a result of his two victories, Phillips wasn’t alone in delivering podium success for the Husqvarna squad. Eight-time Enduro World Champion Juha Salminen (TE250R) took an early lead in the Enduro 1 class on day one, going on to claim a hard fought eventual runner-up result. On day two Matti Seistola (TE250R) placed third in E1.

Officially marking the start of the second half of the 2013 EWC series, the GP of Portugal remained dry throughout despite the constant threat of rain. High-speed enduro and motocross tests were mixed with a technical extreme test with riders completing four laps of the 40km course.

For Matt Phillips it was a near perfect weekend. Winning six special tests on the opening day to claim a 33-second margin of victory, the EWC newcomer then went on to top the Enduro Junior class on day two. In doing so Phillips moves 17 points clear at the top of the EJ championship standings. On day one the young Australian TE310R rider stamped his authority on the class early on. Quickly building a commanding lead he then maintained his position at the head of the class to claim a deserved win. Day two saw Matt deliver another solid opening lap, from which he was able to keep ahead of his rivals before building a 15-second advantage and claiming his fifth win of the year.

It was a weekend of mixed fortunes for Husqvarna’s Enduro 1 class riders Juha Salminen and Matti Seistola. Both riding well, but both seeing mistakes hamper their performances, it was Salminen who delivered the best result on day one. Leading the E1 class at the start of the first day, Juha battled with Antoine Meo to eventually place as runner-up, just 12 seconds behind the Frenchman. With numerous mistakes stopping him from challenging for a podium result, Seistola placed fourth. Day two saw a reverse in fortunes for the two Finns. With a fall on the enduro test mid-way through the day derailing Salminen’s podium chances, Seistola removed the mistakes that had hampered his performance on day one and placed on the podium in third. Salminen ended the day in seventh.

In the Enduro 2 class Lorenzo Santolino on his TE310R secured two seventh place results. Ending his home GP one week earlier disappointed with his performances, Lorenzo delivered two consistent performances in Portugal while battling against countrymen Oriol Mena and Victor Guerrero. 

The Enduro World Championship continues with the GP of Romania on June 15-16.

Juha Salminen (Enduro 1 – TE250R): “Generally the weekend was good, I don’t have anything that I’m too disappointed about although my results were a little mixed. At the beginning of the first day I was very competitive, and won all of the tests on the opening lap. Then the tests had a lot of grip and there were different lines to choose. After that there was just one line and a lot of riders were all going the same speed. In the end I finished second, which was good. I hoped to go one better on day two. Obviously crashing wasn’t what I wanted, and that kept me off the podium. My front wheel washed out in a corner on the enduro test and the time I lost was enough to drop me back to seventh. When it’s as close as it is in the Enduro 1 class one mistake is all it takes to drop you down the results.”

Matti Seistola (Enduro 1 – TE 250R): “I made things difficult for myself this weekend. During the first day I wasn’t myself – I made a lot of mistakes and felt tired. Not physically tired, just not able to ride like I know I can. I crashed three times and finished fourth. I really wasn’t happy with that. I was riding really well on the second day until the third motocross test, when I crashed. After that I struggled to find my rhythm and lost my confidence a little. The final lap was really difficult, but I managed to get on the podium and I’m pleased about that. In parts the weekend was great for me as my speed was good. There were just a few too many small mistakes, which stopped me getting better results.”

Matt Phillips (Enduro Junior – TE 310R): “I’m really happy with how the weekend has turned out. Getting another two wins has been great but more importantly I’ve been able to extend my lead in the championship. I think I’m starting to find my feet in this championship. I felt a lot more comfortable with my bike and the track this weekend than I have done all season. I was able to hit all my lines almost every time I rode the special tests and could see an improvement in my riding as the weekend progressed. I feel like everything is starting to come together now as we start the second half of the season so I’m hoping to keep building on this momentum at the next round in Romania.”

Lorenzo Santolino (Enduro 2 – TE 310R): “I felt a lot better than I did at the GP of Spain and enjoyed the race. I finished seventh on both days, which I was pleased with. I was fighting with Victor Guerrero and Oriol Mena throughout the weekend, and they were one or two seconds faster than me in each special test. I pushed as hard as I could. I didn’t have any crashes and the weekend went well.”

Campionato del mondo Enduro – GP del Portogallo

Husqvarna ottiene una doppia vittoria con Phillips nella classe Junior e il podio per Salminen e Seistola nella E1

Trasferta di successo per l’Husqvarna Enduro Team by CH Racing nel Gran Premio del Portogallo, quarta prova del Mondiale Enduro 2013. Il giovane pilota australiano Matt Phillips ha conquistato in sella alla TE 310R due brillanti vittorie nella classe Enduro Junior. 

Ottimi piazzamenti anche per l’otto volte campione del mondo Juha Salminen (TE 250R) e per il suo compagno di squadra Matti Seistola; i due finlandesi hanno concluso secondo e terzo della classe E1 rispettivamente nella prima e nella seconda giornata di gara.

Il GP del Portogallo segna ufficialmente l’inizio della seconda metà della stagione 2013 del campionato mondiale di Enduro. La gara era composta da un tracciato di 40km da ripetere quattro volte, con due veloci test di enduro e motocross, alternati ad una prova estrema molto tecnica. Tutte le prove speciali sono state caratterizzate da un clima secco e asciutto, nonostante la costante minaccia di pioggia.

Per Matt Phillips è stato un weekend quasi perfetto. Vincendo sei prove speciali il giorno di apertura è riuscito a concludere con più di 30 secondi di vantaggio sul suo inseguitore. il giovane australiano ha dimostrato la sua autorevolezza già dalle fasi iniziali di gara, costruendo rapidamente un vantaggio che ha poi mantenuto fino alla fine. La seconda giornata ha visto Matt eseguire un’altra ottima partenza nelle prime speciali, tenendo testa ai suoi rivali e costruendo un solido vantaggio di 15 secondi, che lo ha portato alla quinta vittoria stagionale. Phillips ha rafforzato la sua leadership nella classifica generale della classe Enduro Junior che ora conduce con 17 punti di vantaggio.

Juha Salminen e Matti Seistola hanno invece vissuto un weekend con alti e bassi nella classe E1. Entrambi hanno infatti guidato bene, ma hanno commesso alcuni errori che ne hanno limitato la performance. 

Per Salminen il miglior risultato è arrivato il primo giorno. Juha ha combattuto con Antoine Meo per tutta la gara finendo a soli 12 secondi dal francese. Seistola ha invece commesso numerosi errori, piazzandosi a pochi secondi dal gradino più basso del podio. 

La seconda giornata ha visto un’inversione delle fortune per i due finlandesi. Con una caduta nel test di enduro a metà gara, Salminen ha visto vanificate le sue speranze di agguantare il podio, mentre Seistola ha sapientemente evitato gli errori che lo avevano ostacolato il primo giorno, ottenendo il terzo posto sul podio. Salminen ha chiuso la giornata in settima posizione.

Nella classe Enduro 2 Lorenzo Santolino, sulla TE 310R, ha ottenuto il settimo piazzamento in classifica in entrambe le giornate. Deluso dalle sue performance di una settimana prima nel GP di casa, in Portogallo ha ottenuto due buoni risultati, dopo un avvincente confronto con i suoi connazionali, Oriol Mena e Victor Guerrero.

La prossima tappa del Campionato del Mondo di Enduro è in programma il 15-16 giugno con il GP di Romania.

Juha Salminen (Enduro 1 – TE 250R): “In generale il fine settimana è stato buono. Non ho niente da recriminare, anche se i miei risultati sono stati un po’ variabili. All’inizio del primo giorno ero molto competitivo, e ho vinto tutti i test durante il primo giro. Poi le speciali si sono rovinate parecchio e c’erano diverse linee tra cui scegliere. Successivamente la traiettoria è diventata una, usata da tutti i piloti, e ciò ha creato dei rallentamenti . Comunque arrivare secondo è un buon risultato. Speravo di fare meglio il giorno successivo. Ovviamente la caduta durante la speciale non ci voleva e questo errore mi ha tenuto fuori dal podio. Mi è scivolata la ruota anteriore durante il test di enduro; il tempo che ho perso è stato sufficiente a farmi retrocedere in settima posizione. Quando si è così vicini nelle performance come nella classe Enduro 1, un solo errore è sufficiente a fare precipitare i propri risultati”.

Matti Seistola (Enduro 1 – TE 250R): “Mi sono complicato la vita questo fine settimana. Durante il primo giorno non ero me stesso – ho fatto un sacco di errori e mi sentivo stanco. Non stanco fisicamente, ma non riuscivo a guidare come so di poter fare. Sono caduto tre volte e ho finito la mia gara al quarto posto. Davvero non ero soddisfatto. Il secondo giorno invece ho guidato molto bene fino alla terza prova di motocross, quando sono caduto. Dopodiché ho faticato a ritrovare il mio ritmo e ho perso un po’ la mia fiducia. L’ultimo giro è stato davvero difficile, ma sono comunque riuscito a salire sul podio e sono contento di questo. In alcuni momenti, il fine settimana è stato fantastico per me. La mia velocità era buona ma ho fatto troppi piccoli errori, che mi hanno impedito di ottenere risultati migliori”.

Matt Phillips (Enduro Junior – TE 310R): “Sono davvero contento di questo fine settimana. Ottenere altre due vittorie è stato grandioso, ma soprattutto sono stato in grado di aumentare il mio vantaggio in campionato. Penso di aver iniziato a trovare il mio spazio in questo campionato. Mi sentivo molto più a mio agio con la moto e con la pista di quanto non abbia fatto durante tutta la stagione. Sono stato in grado di seguire tutte le linee che desideravo quasi in ogni situazione durante le prove speciali, vedendo un importante miglioramento nella mia guida anche rispetto al fine settimana precedente. Mi sento come se tutto stesse cominciando a prendere forma: ora ci troviamo nella seconda metà della stagione. Quindi spero di continuare a costruire e conquistare punti anche al prossimo appuntamento in Romania.”

Lorenzo Santolino (Enduro 2 – TE 310R): “Mi sono sentito molto meglio rispetto al GP di Spagna e mi sono goduto la gara. Ho finito settimo in entrambe le giornate, e sono abbastanza soddisfatto. Ho lottato con Victor Guerrero e Oriol Mena per tutto il weekend, anche se erano uno o due secondi più veloci di me in ogni prova speciale. Ho spinto più forte che potevo. Non ho fatto nessuna caduta e sono contento”.
