“To be perfectly honest I am a little bit surprised to have finished second today after just one day’s competition aboard my new Yamaha– it certainly wasn’t on the programme! My priority was just to get a feel for the bike and get used to racing again after not having ridden a bike in anger since January. It wasn’t an easy debut either. This morning’s special was very technical, while this afternoon it was cold and foggy with tricky navigation.

Despite all that I really enjoyed myself. Of course I’m a racer at heart and so never happier than when competing and then there was the pleasure of discovering the YZF450. The two things that stood out were the engine which is very strong and the aluminium chassis which is impressively stable. Here, on this somewhat atypical event, we are using a set up that is somewhere between an enduro machine and a rally bike, but we are already busy analysing and making notes so as to be race ready come next January. At the end of these five days I am sure we will have gained a lot more useful information to help us in that goal.”
