MXGP ROUND 06 – PORTOGALLO

Il fine settimana soleggiato del sesto round del Campionato del Mondo FIM di Motocross 2019 è iniziato nel migliore dei modi per Tony Cairoli che da sempre ama la terra rossa portoghese. Agueda è una pista dove ha corso già dodici volte, finendo sul podio in undici occasioni, quindi nessuna sorpresa per quest’anno, visto che il pilota del team KTM Red Bull ha continuato la sua striscia positiva con due secondi posti, dopo due durissime battaglie, che hanno regalato al siciliano il 165° podio della sua carriera, con la tabella rossa che rimane saldamente attaccata alla sua KTM 450 SX-F, con 34 punti di vantaggio sul secondo. Dopo essere stato secondo nelle prove libere e nella sessione cronometrata, Tony ha vinto la gara di qualifica del sabato, prendendo il miglior cancello per le manche della domenica. Il nove volte Campione del Mondo è uscito bene dal cancello nella prima gara, centrando l’hole-shot e spingendo per dodici giri fino a quando non ha per un istante spento accidentalmente la moto, perdendo il primo posto. Nei restanti sette giri Cairoli ha provato di tutto per tornare in testa ma non ci è riuscito ed ha tagliato il traguardo in seconda posizione, ad un solo secondo dal vincitore. La seconda partenza è stata di nuovo buona e dopo poche curve la tabella rossa della serie ha conquistato la seconda piazza, spingendo forte per prendere il comando, superando Desalle dopo diversi tentativi, su una pista che non favoriva affatto i sorpassi. Purtroppo una caduta ha di fatto spento le speranze di centrare la vittoria, ma riprendendo la gara in quinta posizione e facendo uno sforzo incredibile, è riuscito a passare sotto la bandiera a scacchi secondo, conquistando il sesto podio stagionale. Il prossimo appuntamento con la MXGP sarà ospitato tra sei giorni sul terreno duro della pista francese di St. Jean d’Angely.

Antonio Cairoli: “Da un lato sono felice perché l’obiettivo è essere sempre sul podio ed essere costanti, ma dall’altra parte sono deluso perché, specialmente nella prima manche ho fatto un errore banale, facendo spegnere la moto e quando ero secondo non sono più riuscito ad attaccare davvero Tim, perché stava spingendo molto forte, terminando nella sua scia. Nella seconda manche invece, mentre ero in testa e cercavo di trovare una buona linea, ho colpito un sasso all’interno della nuova traiettoria che ha spostato la ruota anteriore, facendo finire la ruota posteriore fuori dal canale, facendomi cadere. Sono comunque contento di non essermi fatto male ma mi sono ritrovato quinto e ho cercato di rimontare nel più breve tempo possibile per restare vicino a Tim ma quando ci sono riuscito il distacco era ampio ed era quasi impossibile riprenderlo. Certo, come ho detto, sono felice ma sono già concentrato sul prossimo round dove voglio essere costante evitando di fare di nuovo questo tipo di errori.”

MXGP Round 06 – Portugal

The sunny weekend of the sixth round of the FIM Motocross World Championship 2019 started well for Tony Cairoli, a rider who loves the Portuguese red soil. TC222has previously raced twelve times on the Agueda track , finishing on the box eleven times, so no surprises this year as the KTM Red Bull factory racing team rider again found his way to the podium with two second places finishes after two hard fought heats. This gave the Sicilian the 165th podium of his career, as well as retaining the red plate aboard his KTM 450 SX-F with a 34 point lead over second place. After finishing second in both free practice and the timed session, Tony took victory in Saturday’s qualifying race, getting himself a good first gate pick for Sunday’s motos. The nine time World Champion went well out of the gate in the first heat, taking the hole-shot and charging out in front for twelve laps until a small mistake saw him stall the bike, losing the lead in the process. During the remaining seven laps Cairoli tried everything to pass back but it wasn’t to be and he crossed the finish line in second, one second behind the winner. His second start was another good one and after a few corners the Italian was second, pushing hard for the lead, passing Desalle after several attempts on a track that didn’t favor overtaking at all. Unfortunately a crash made hopes of a victory vanish as he resumed the race in fifth, putting in an incredible effort to get back to second before passing under the checkered flag. Next round will be hosted in six days on the hard pack of St. Jean d’Angely, for the MXGP of France.

Antonio Cairoli: “On the one hand I’m happy because the goal is to always be on the podium and to always be consistent, and today we were, but on the other hand I’m disappointed because, particularly in the first moto, I made a silly mistake. I stalled the bike and then when I was in second I couldn’t really get past Tim, because he was pushing really hard and he was plenty fast enough. In the second moto I was trying to find a better line through the place that I crashed at earlier, I chose another one at the last moment but unfortunately I hit a little rock that moved the front wheel and threw the rear wheel out of the rut, causing me to crash. At the the end of the day I’m happy that I didn’t hurt myself but at that moment I was back in fifth and I tried to close the gap on Tim as soon as possible but the gap was too big and it was almost impossible to catch him. Of course I’m happy as I said and I’m focussed on the next round, trying to be consistent and to not make those mistakes again.”
